Leonid Kuchma
Biography
Born On August 9, 1938
in Chaikyne village, Chernihiv region
Parents Father - Danylo Kuchma, died in 1944 at the front.
Mother - Paraska Kuchma, a collective farmer.
Family status Married with a daughter, Olena, and a grandson, Roman. His wife
Lyudmyla Kuchma is Honorary President of the National Fund for Social Protection
of Mothers and Children "Ukraine to Children". His daughter Olena
is an economist.
Education Higher. In 1960 Mr. Kuchma graduated from Dnipropetrovsk State University,
Department of Physical Engineering, and obtained a degree in rocket engineering.
Professor, candidate of technical sciences, author of numerous inventions
and scientific technical works, Honorary Doctor of numerous foreign institutes
of higher education, full member of a number of Academies of Sciences.
Public Activity
1960-1982 Engineer, senior engineer, leading designer, assistant chief designer,
technical director of tests of rocket and space complexes at Baikonur Space
Centre.
1975-1981 Secretary of the Party Committee of the Design Bureau "Pivdenne"
(Southern).
1981-1982 Secretary of the Party Committee of the Manufacturing Company "Pivdenny
Engineering Plant"
1982-1986 First Deputy General Designer of the Design Bureau "Pivdenne"
(Southern).
1986-1992 Director General of the Manufacturing Company "Pivdenny Engineering
Plant", one of the world's largest factories manufacturing military and
rocket space equipment, as well as civil products.
1990-1992 National deputy of Ukraine (12th convocation), a member of the Committee
on Defence and State Security.
1992-1993 Prime-Minister of Ukraine, a member of the National Security Council.
September 1993 Resigned from the post of Prime-Minister of Ukraine
1993-1994 President of the Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.
March-August - 1994 People's Deputy of Ukraine of the 2nd Verkhovna Rada,
a member of the interregional deputy group.
1994-1996 Co-Head of the Constitution Commission.
July 1994 Was elected President of Ukraine.
November 1999 Was elected President of Ukraine for the second term.
